Exclamation Method didn't execute...pls. help me find the bug? :( - 08-14-2010, 09:43 PM

This is in connection to my previous post that "debussybunny563" helped me with => http://www.alice.org/community/showthread.php?t=4870

Everything is exactly what I need, except for the part where the "world.chooseCone" method is not executing when I called it in world.my first world. I have seen some programs from other posts on here that use random functions and I wonder why the methods with random functions execute when called.

I have only been using Alice for 3 weeks now for my programming class which I took this summer. None of these were discussed in class so I am totally clueless. This project is due tomorrow midnight. Pretty please, help me?!

UPDATE:

I found the problem--the random function was, for some reason, not generating any random number. What I did instead was to create a new variable with a list of [1,2,3,4] and replaced this variable to the [random number]...AND IT WORKED!! Woohoo! Now, all I need is to put some details (skating movement) to each skater. Thank you again for all your help on here. I'm learning more on here than I did in my class.
Thank you very much!

Aha, so you found the problem.

Good luck on your assignment!
BTW, tell me how it goes.

I self-taught myself how to do Alice, and while I can do pretty much anything now (except for all that fancy jython scripting and whatnot that I haven't and probably won't learn), it took a long time for me to finally figure things out.

Basically, I've made 4 or 5 FPS games, each one being more complex (and a whole lot better) than the next. Finally, this is what came out: http://www.alice.org/community/showt...4062#post24062
Along the way, I kept on experimenting with the aspects of Alice programming, and finally got the hang of it.

I wish I had some sort of textbook to follow as well, but hey, they cost money, so whatev.

Good luck in the future! (come back often)

In middle school, we spent a little bit of the last month or so of school to look at Alice a bit. This wasn't a class dedicated to learning programming or anything, so I can understand this, but the only things we 'learned' was what was in the built-in tutorial.

Basically, our task was to create a storyboard, a movie.
One event.
One method.
Some do togethers and do in orders here and there.

Pretty complex stuff.

If you take a look first at some of the things Alice is capable of, you understand that it's a lot more flexible.

My really only peeve is that there are sometimes bugs with Alice, and that it doesn't handle very large worlds/games very well, but it's a great program and I hope you make progress in the future.
