Unhappy new to Alice - question on adding objects - 11-16-2009, 07:38 AM

Hi - I'm teaching Alice for the first time. I was unable to attend the workshop at CMU this summer. I'm working in the exercises in the Learning to Program with Alice book. In chapter 1 the task is to place 4 soldiers on the air craft carrier. When I drag the soldiers on they disappear. I also tried double clicking - add instance to world and lost them as well. I tried looking for them using the quad view. I ended up resizing to 30 times the size and then I found them. I tried dragging them onto the carrier but that didn't work. I then re-did the project by first putting the soldiers on then the carrier. That worked better but I still had a hard time moving the soldiers onto the carrier. Any suggestions on how to make this easier? I had no problems with the first exercise and the fish and the island.

Thanks for any help. I feel like a hamster spinning the wheels!

It sounds like if you put them next to the aircraft carrier first and then use the mouse tool to move them up and then over onto it you wouldnt lose them. Are they just getting lost because they are inside of the aircraft carrier?

I like to use the motion hotkeys to avoid this. If you hold the mouse down on the object you want to move, you can hold shift to move it up and down, hold ctrl to turn it right or left, and hold ctrl and shift to tumble it (turn forward/backward and roll left/right combined).

These hotkeys also work when clicking and dragging the yellow box that shows where an added object will appear.
