Default How do I delete sounds and methods? - 04-21-2006, 10:15 PM

I imported a number of sounds into a world I was building and now the file size of the world is huge. I'd like to delete the sounds to reduce the filesize of the world. I was hoping I could avoid starting from scratch.

I navigate to the World's Detail Pane and locate the sound files as Sounds under the Details Tree. I see all of the sounds I've imported. If right-click on a sound file I see that I can rename it but that's all. How can I delete them? Is it possible perhaps to remove them directly from the world file (.a2w) without corrupting the file or is there a simpler solution?

I also can't delete object methods once I've created them, again in the object's details window, I only see the Rename option when I right click on the method. I guess I could just create a new instance of the object and copy all of the custom variables, methods and functions to the new instance minus the methods I want removed. Am I missing something? Is there an easier way?

Thanks!

I don't know about deleting sounds but for deleting methods you have written try first deleting ALL references to them and then instead of right-clicking on the method to delete it try dragging the method you wrote from the Details View window into the Trash Can.

It works for me. Good luck and since I have not tried it with sounds, you may wish to try that also. Good luck

Hehe, yeah the trashcan worked, duh! I guess I just got use to interacting with the interface a certain way, right-clicking was less mouse movement.... I'm just making excuses now...

Yikes!

Thanks a bunch...

Just thought I'd add a note to anyone hunting for info on bloated file sizes and sound....

I had three worlds that I'd put sounds into. I was just goofing around with the feature, and had added some large .mp3s without editing them down to reasonable sound bites. I'd notice how large the file became, and overlooked the trashcan feature.

Anyway, once I'd dragged all of the sound files to the trashcan everything looked fine on the surface. Physically looking at the files though showed that while 1 file was drastically smaller, two of them didn't seem to have gotten smaller at all; comparing them to their previous back-ups it looked like they may actually have gotten about half-a-meg bigger.

I looked in the .a2w compressed files and verified that the .mp3s were gone. I thought maybe with all the objects I've been adding perhaps the size was legitimate, but it continued to bug me.

I unpacked the .a2w file and recompressed it with winzip. I thought that doing this might corrupt files so I made a copy. It worked great. The file was 20 megs, now it's just 3.

Thanks again.

GREAT info to know!! Thank you. Now if we could just get a Tech Guy from the development team to join and offer us some technical support on a regular basis.

It sounds like an old DOS problem where you 'delete' but it simply 'marks' something as being deleted but does not actually remove it. Thanks very much for the information.

First, I'm glad the community found the "rezip" work-around.

Another solution would be to "save as" under a new filename - the "clean save" will avoid the gaps (which, as you have surmised, we leave in because it makes subsequent saves much faster; many modern applications do this).

As for having a technical guy chime in, I hope this suffices ;-)
