Default Problems with Alice Tutorial #1 - 04-13-2010, 09:21 AM

I recently had a class that required the use of Alice 2.2 for my Mac. I am operating a new laptop with the latest version of Snow Leopard installed. I tried the first tutorial, but when I came to page 27 or 28 it performs the desired task and then the next page appears, and then disappears, with a post-it note #2 of 2 that says I must have performed a step wrong and to go back and try again. I have done this at least a dozen times and it keeps looping back to this same message. Post-it note #1 of 2 does not appear, however. I simply cannot get past this point. Tutorials #2 and #3 work fine, no problem. When I go to the next tutorial however, the program locks up on me and I have to do a restart. This is very frustrating, to say the least. Needless to say I received a failing grade for the class because I was unable to get the assignments in on time because of this glitch.

It was my understanding that this program was supposed to work a Mac. The school is trying to lay this problem in my lap saying I should have had a backup plan (meaning a computer) in place. However, these classes are time constrained enough when things are going good, let alone when they aren't, to go around the city trying to find a compatible alternative. The school policy is that is up to the student to have access to hardware (PC or Mac) that allows you to have compatibility with the software they supply. It is up to the school to make sure there are no bugs like this in the system that prevent students from taking part in their classes. And, if the school doesn't want to take responsibility for this action, then it should be up to the people at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, where this program was developed, to make sure this program works, or at least tell a person how to circumvent this problem. I sent several email messages to Carnegie Mellon alerting of this situation, but I have yet to receive work back from them. That was a month ago.

I would like to know how to resolve this situation so that it doesn't happen again. I think the concept of the Alice software is good, but it should work on the platform a person is operating in no matter what. I shouldn't have to switch to a PC since I like Macs and I have luck with them in the past. I can't afford to go back and switch at this point, nor would I want to.

I would like to find a way to finally get this problem resolved.

Sorry about your problem. Do you have the latest version of Alice 2.2? Try the new version and see if you are still experiencing all those difficulties.
