Default American Sign Language (ASL) - 07-29-2009, 11:30 AM

I'm doing a Alice project for my children that can show some American Sign Language (ASL) using this program. Would you please help me do a couple of them for me to get started such as to show YES and NO or show a letter A or even a sign of "I love you". Attached is a sample that I've done so far for letter B. Any suggestions and shortcuts would be much appreciated. Thank you.

That's quite an undertaking. The simple matter is that you will have to capture each pose or program movements for each finger piece. And the arm you are using would have to be attached to a human model. (most full body model's hands are not complex enough for ASL.

(I know basic ASL.) I would be willing to help you make some signs, but I think Alice is not the best tool for demonstrating sign language.

Yes, it's difficult and time consuming when I've done the sign for letter B but maybe using some other techniques like using List and Array would be easier. Unfortunately, I'm a rookie in programming.

Any input would be much appreciated. Thank you.

May I ask what your goal is? To teach ASL or just a demonstration?

The only help a list or array would be (i think) is that you could organize the signs.

I did a few.

Hi Veryuhball,

Thank you. I downloaded the file and it was empty except for the hand.

Thanks

sorry I forgot to explain. I put the poses on the palm.
you can right click the arm, choose methods, choose set pose and choose a pose.

They are there, I accidentally hid them

Glad to see someone making tools for kids to learn sign. If you go to www.cats.gatech.edu you will find many there. We are using Flash and have several templates for different types of games to teach sign vocabulary to kids. If you'rte interested contact me via email.
