alice.org redesign

I have just put up a redesign of our beloved homepage, www.alice.org.

It's still a work in progress, but we wanted to release it sooner rather than later.

If you come across bugs, broken links, or frustrations (good comments are welcome too ), share them here. Nothing is set in stone, except for the actual design. I will be shuffling things around and adding/deleting content over the course of the next several weeks, so now is the time to make your website comments.

On the whole it looks rather nice. However, it isn't particularly accessible.

In Firefox:

The text at the top near "FREE" won't resize at all, it seems to be part of the image. Can that image be done as SVG so the text can be extracted?

When the text is enlarged the headlines in the coloured boxes crash into the text, and the same happens with the navigation tabs. The size it comes up as in the first place is very small.

In Internet Explorer 7:

The whole page expands with <CTRL-scrollwheel> but the animation doesn't.
The graduated colours make the text more difficult to see than one would wish.
The layout of boxes is much better than in Firefox. I think there have been some layout
problems in Firefox for ages.

Overall problems:
The white text in the animation banner is difficult to read over light backgrounds. The curly font may cause difficulty for some dyslexics. There seems to be no alternate text or title text that the browser can pull out for those having difficulty reading this.

You may wish to consider using some alternate stylesheets, so people have choices about how things look.

One of my frustrations with the Alice package itself is that there's been no way to change the colour scheme, since I find the glare from displays difficult. It would be
nice to have some choice over foreground and background colours.

I hope this is the sort of feedback you need.

I believe that HGS has already mentioned this, but let me chime in and emphasize one of his points. At startup in both Firefox and IE7, the text in the boxes is so small that it is difficult to read. Although it can be manually enlarged, I believe that the default should be readable for most people with manual adjustments being required only in special circumstances.
